Jacob McDonnell (So., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) set a school record with 430 all-purpose running yards, the most in the NCAA Division III ranks in six years, to lead Macalester past Beloit 34-21 in the season-opener. McDonnell started Mac's comeback with an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and by the end of the day had accumulated 190 yards and two touchdowns on six pass receptions and 143 rushing yards on 24 carries. In addition to his long kickoff return which cut into a 14-0 Beloit lead, McDonnell had touchdown receptions of 45 and 66 yards.
