Kenyon's men and women moved closer to repeating as team champs on the third day of the NCAA Division III championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Kenyon's men stand in first with 482 team points, well ahead of Emory with 324, Denison with 234½ and St. Olaf with 205. The Kenyon women have 426 and are holding off conference rival Denison with 312, Emory with 311½ and Williams with 279½ going into the fourth and final day of competition tomorrow.
The Kenyon men are going for their 30th straight MIAC title and the Kenyon women are shooting for their 23rd championship and third in a row.
After winning the 100 fly yesterday, Logan Todhunter from Williams added the 200-yard butterfly (1:58.80) title to start the evening's session. Also claiming NCAA individual championships for the women were Denison's Olivia Zaleski in the 100 backstroke (54.80), Kenyon's Tracy Menzel in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.76) and Calvin's Erica Deur in 1-meter diving (496.05). Deur's score is a Division III record.
Emory's women also set a national mark in winning the 800-yard freestyle relay (7:21.05).
Four events were contested on the men's side and two were won by repeat champs. Matthew Harris from Kenyon, who won his second 100 butterfly crown Thursday, repeated as champ in the 200-yard fly (1:46.74) to give the Lords their sixth title of the meet and lead a 1-2-3 Kenyon sweep. Also successfully defending his '08 title was Pavel Buyanov from Staten Island in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.27). Buyanov shattered his own national record from a year ago from last year's NCAA's.
John Thomas from Johns Hopkins moved up a spot from last season's championships when he won the 100-yard backstroke (48.65). Denison closed out the evening session by repeating as 800-yard freestyle relay champs in Division III record time (6:32.91).
Competition continues tomorrow at the U of M Aquatic Center, with prelims getting started at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m. each day. Saturday's events are the 1650-yard freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, men's 3-meter diving and the 400-yard freestyle relay.
