Freshman Zachary Turk won the 50-yard freestyle (19.86) and anchored the first-place 200-yard medley relay (1:28.45) to lead the Kenyon men to the top spot in the standings after the first of four days at the NCAA Division III swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
Kenyon has 154 points to take an early advantage over Emory (101) and St. Olaf (78). Kenyon is going for its 30th consecutive NCAA title.
Kenyon also has a lead in the race for the women's crown as the Division III championships are being held as a co-ed meet for the first time. The Ladies, the defending women's champions, took first-place finishes in the evening's second and third events. Tina Ertel swam to top honors in the finals of the 200 individual medley (2:02.31) and Elizabeth Carlton won the 50-yard freestyle (22.80).
With 142 team points, Kenyon enjoys a lead over Denison (111), Emory (111) and Williams (89½).
Event winners on the men's side, other than Turk in the 50 and Kenyon's medley relay, were St. Olaf's Nelson Westby, who earned his third straight 200 IM title (1:48.82), and Alex Fraser of Amherst, who placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:21.95). Westby beat teammate Jacob Cook for first.
Women's national champs, in addition to Kenyon's Horvat and Ertel, were Emory's Liz Horvat in the 500 free (4:47.04), SUNY-Fredonia's Kelly Sponholz in 3-meter diving (516.50), and Denison, with a repeat victory in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.20).
Competition resumes tomorrow with preliminary round competition at 10 a.m. and finals at 5:30 p.m. Thursday's events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle and men's 1-meter diving. They will also start with the 200 freestyle relay and finish with the 400 medley relay.
