Seven more records fall in Day 2 at NCAA Championships

Midway through the four-day NCAA Division III men's and women's swimming & diving championships at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Kenyon is holding off Emory, Denison and Williams for the top spot in the women's team standings. The Ladies picked up their third and fourth first-place finishes on the meet Thursday and have 309 team points. Emory is in the runner-up position with 246, followed by Denison with 233 and Williams with 214½.

Kenyon's men won three events to bring its two-day total to five and with 358½ team points, leads by a more comfortable margin over Emory (221), Denison (160) and St. Olaf (150) in its bid for a 30th national title in a row.

NCAA Division III records were broken in the first five events in Thursday finals and on the night seven national marks were established to go along with four marks set in Wednesday's finals.

On the women's side, Emory started the evening session by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.08) and Denison finished things up by taking the 400 medley relay (3:43.43). Winning individual events were Liz Horvat from Emory in the 400 individual medley (4:16.17), Logan Todhunter from Williams in the 100 butterfly (53.54) and Kendra Stern from Amherst in the 200 free (1:47.67).

Horvat won the 500 freestyle yesterday and Stern repeats as 200 free champion.

Kenyon's men claimed each relay, taking the 200 freestyle relay (1:19.15) and 400 medley relay (3:15.58).

Nicholas Halbach from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy) earned the top score in 1-meter diving (524.70). Winning swimming events were Washington U's Alex Beyer in the 400 IM (3:51.45), Kenyon's Matthew Harris in the 100 fly (47.86) and Denison's David Curtis in the 200 freestyle (1:37.20). Harris and Curtis successful defended their '08 crowns and Curtis is a three-time champ in the 200 free.

Competition continues tomorrow and Saturday at the U of M Aquatic Center, with prelims getting started at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 5:30 p.m. each day. Friday's events are the 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, women's 1-meter diving and the 800 freestyle relay.
