One day after taking runner-up honors in the 100 back,
Nathan Young (So., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) swam to another second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke Saturday night at the MIAC championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Young had the second best prelim time in the morning (1:53.98) and in the finals reached the wall with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1:51.18.
Last night, Young automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III championships.
The Scots improved two positions from last year's meet, holding off St. Mary's by 16 points to finish sixth out of eight teams.
Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani) reached the consolation finals of the 100-yard freestyle and placed 14th overall (49.06).
Josh Tomashek (Fy., Las Vegas, Nev. / Valley) gained a 14th-place finish in the 200 breastroke (2:24.94). In 3-meter diving,
Jens Tameng (So., Portland, Ore. / Catlin Gabel) placed 10th (250.45) and
Aaron Hammer (Fy., Chevy Chase, Md. / Edmund Burke School) was 13th (214.65).
Macalester closed out the championships by placing sixth in the 400 free relay (3:18.80) behind the swims of Young, Yamashita,
Paco Venneri (Fy., Los Alamos, N.M.)and
Seth McIntire (Sr., Seattle, Wash. / Garfield).
St. Olaf won the team championship over Gustavus.
