Macalester Day 1 recap
Nathan Young (Fy., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) made an outstanding attempt to defend his conference 100-yard backstroke title but was edged by 1/10 second at the wall to earn a second-place finish at the MIAC men’s swimming and diving championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Young was edged by Peter Mullee of St. Thomas for the title. Young finished the race in 50.31, easily breaking his own school record by over a second and earning an automatic berth into the March 18-21 NCAA Division III championships, which Macalester will host at this same U of M venue.
Young trailed St. Olaf’s Adam Meyer at the halfway point, passed Meyer, but could not hold off Mullee, a University of Minnesota transfer, for the title. Mullee’s time was a conference record 50.20. Young, along with his rivals from UST and St. Olaf, meet up again tomorrow in the 200 backstroke. Young placed fourth yesterday in the 50-yard freestyle.
The Scots placed seventh in the 200-yard medley relay (1:41.69). Swimmers were Young,
Josh Tomashek (Fy., Las Vegas, Nev. / Valley),
Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani) and
Seth McIntire (Sr., Seattle, Wash. / Garfield). Mac was also seventh in the 800 free (8:39.86) behind the swims of McIntire,
Paco Venneri (Fy., Los Alamos, N.M. / Los Alamos)
Jens Tameng (So., Portland, Ore. / Catlin Gabel) and Tomashek.
Mac is holding off St. Mary's for sixth place going into tomorrow's competition.
