Macalester began the three-day MIAC Championships by getting a fourth-place finish from
Nathan Young (So., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) in the 50-yard freestyle finals Thursday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis. Young swam to the fourth-best time in the morning preliminary round (21.14) and followed that up with a 21.11 clocking in the finals. He misses his fourth career all-conference certificate by one place and just 0.23 seconds.
Gustavus leads the team competition after day 1 with a slim lead over St. Olaf and Macalester stands in sixth out of eight teams.
The Scots placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.84). In the 400-yard medley relay, Mac was seventh (3:43.39). Macalester's swimmers in the 200 free re(lay were Young,
Paco Venneri (Fy., Los Alamos, N.M. / Los Alamos),
Seth McIntire (Sr., Seattle, Wash. / Garfield)and
Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani). The 400 medley relay swimmers were Young,
Josh Tamashek (Fy., Las Vegas, Nev. / Valley), Yamashita and Venneri.
In 1-meter diving,
Jens Tameng (So., Portland, Ore. / Catlin Gabel) placed 11th (215.05) and
Aaron Hammer (Fy., Chevy Chase, Md. / Edmund Burke School) was 12th (192.65).
Championship competition resumes tomorrow and Saturday, with preliminary rounds starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m. Young will attempt to defend his 100-yard backstroke title in the final event of the night.
