Macalester Day 2 recap
Macalester moved up a couple spots from last season when it placed fifth out of 11 teams at the MIAC swimming & diving championships at the University of Minnesota.
One night after winning the MIAC 3-meter diving championship, Mac's
Annie Flanagan (Sr., Madison, Wis. / East) closed out a great conference meet career by adding the 1-meter MIAC crown near the end of the evening competition to clinch fifth-place for the Scots. Flanagan earned the top score in the semi-finals (394.05) and in the finals received a 404.80 mark to easily beat runner-up Lauren Trudeau of Concordia (368.80).
Flanagan came into this week's MIAC meet with three runner-up conference efforts in diving and now adds the 1-meter title to her win on the 3-meter board Friday. She'll likely dive at the NCAA Division III championships in four weeks. At the conclusion of the meet, Flanagan was announced as
MIAC Diver of the Year.
On the third and final evening of the meet, Mac's
Grace Fleming (Fy., Northampton, Mass.) earned all-conference status by swimming to a runner-up finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. Fleming completed the race in 17:09.69, holding off the third-place contestant by 12 seconds and taking runner-up honors.
MIAC 100-yard breaststroke champion and meet record-holder
Karoline Hart (Fy., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) earned her second All-MIAC certificate when she placed third in the 200 breaststroke finals with an NCAA B cut qualifying time of 2:25.83. She has a chance to join Flanagan at the NCAA meet.
Clare Pillsbury (Fy., Baraboo, Wis.) joined Fleming to give the Scots a pair of top finishers in the 1650 free, taking eighth place (18:29.43). Earlier in the meet, Pillsbury placed fourth in the 400-yard individual medley and fifth in the 200 IM.
Claire Eder (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) and
Hillary Frey (Fy., Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) earned points in the 200 back. Eder placed 11th (2:15.63) and Frey was right behind in 12th (2:15.73). In the 100-yard freestyle,
Alex Cortes (Sr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) finished 12th (54.36). In the meet's final event, the Scots took sixth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:40.45) behind the swims of Hart, Fleming,
Anna Gajewski (Jr., Wausau, Wis. / East) and Cortes.
The Scots held of St. Benedict by a comfortable margin for fifth. Carleton walked away with the team championship over Gustavus, while St. Thomas got past St. Olaf for fourth.
