MIAC championship web site with Day 1 results
Grace Fleming (Fy., Northampton, Mass.) placed third in the finals of the 500-yard freestyle to help the Scots get the meet off to a good start Thursday at the MIAC Championships at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Fleming earns All-MIAC honors by swimming to a 5:10.57 time in the finals after posting the second-best prelim mark in the morning session (5:10.93). She was nearly six seconds clear of the fourth-place finisher and was one of just two first-years to make it into the eight-lane finals.
The Scots are in fifth place out of 11 teams after the first of the three-day meet in Minneapolis. Carleton leads the race for the team championship over Gustavus.
Annie Flanagan (Sr., Madison, Wis. / East) leads the field in 3-meter diving with a first round 234.10 score. She'll compete in the semi-finals tomorrow morning, with the finals set for tomorrow night.
Clare Pillsbury (Fy., Baraboo, Wis.) made the finals of the 200-yard individual medley and took fifth (2:12.97). Teammate
Hillary Frey (Fy., Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) placed 10th in this same event (2:14.60).
The Scots were seventh of 11 in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:40.43). Relay team members were
Alex Cortes (Sr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce), Fleming,
Karoline Hart (Fy., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) and
Anna Gajewski (Jr., Wausau, Wis. / East). Mac was also sixth in the 400 medley relay (4:07.46).
Hart also was 10th in the 50 free (24.83) and Cortes was 14th (24.88).
Championship competition resumes tomorrow and Saturday, with preliminary rounds starting at 10:30 a.m. and finals beginning at 6:30 p.m.
