NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Macalester College women's track and field team had an impressive day in the sunshine at the 70th running of the Carleton Relays in Northfield, Minn. The women featured one relay win with five individual champions, as well as personal best performances from many athletes.
Macalester's 4 x 100 meter relay won in a time of 49.19, which ranks second on the school honor list. The team was composed of senior
Kara Komoto (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake), first-year
Lily Schlieman (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou), senior
Anik Regan (Tucson, Ariz./University) and junior
Hannah Sonsalla (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton). Sonsalla also picked up two individual wins in the 200 meter and 400 meter dashes.
In the 200, Sonsalla crossed in 25.67, Komoto finished second in 25.88 and Regan placed fifth in 27.22. Rounding out scoring in the event was senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), who finished seventh in a time of 27.68. In the 400, Sonsalla won in 57.67, now No. 3 on the Macalester honor roll.
Komoto also had a second-place finish in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.01. In the same event, first year
Maya Michon (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) placed sixth in 13.74 seconds.
Hunter was the winner of the 110 hurdles in 15.73 seconds. In the 400 hurdles, sophomore
Gabby Ivy (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) placed third in 1:11.72.
In the 800, the Scots placed first, second, third and sixth. First-year
Victoria Casarrubias (Boulder, Colo./Fairview) led the way at 2:18.72. She was closely followed up by senior
Natalie Prescott (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah) in 2:19.44 and sophomore
Elena Smith (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) in 2:19.81 — both athletes scored PRs as they broke the 2:20 mark for the first time. In sixth, senior
Eliza Ramsey (Olympia, Wash. / Capital) finished out a double in a personal-best 2:23.45.
Earlier in the day, Ramsey placed fourth in the 1500, crossing in 4:50.44. In the same event sophomore
Holly Ellingson (Boise, Idaho/Mountain View) laid out a personal best 4:57.56 to earn seventh overall.
Senior
Kimber Meyer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) made her outdoor debut by winning the 5000 meters in a time of 17:44.84. In the 3000-meter steeplechase senior
Sarah Jo DeVore (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) ran a personal best to take second in 11:27.27. In third place sophomore
Amy Pelz (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) also notched a PR in 12:27.59. First years
Lydia Simpson (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) and
Emma Maxtutis (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) both made their debuts in the event finishing fourth and fifth. They ran 12:37.88 and 12:46.35, respectively.
Junior
Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau) placed second in the javelin with a mark of 37.65 meters (123-06). In the hammer throw, senior
Lynn Zemaitis (Gurnee, Ill./Carmel) placed fourth with a personal-best throw of 37.49 meters (123-00). The performance is a top 10 mark for Macalester. In addition to running, Regan placed third in the pole vault clearing 2.90 meters (9-06.25).
In the triple jump, sophomore
Halla Dontje Lindell (St. Peter, Minn./Saint Peter) placed second in 10.45 meters (34-03.50) with teammate senior
Sarah Silbert (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) finishing third in 10.26 (33-08.00). Silbert also placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 4.74 meters (15-06.75).
To close out the meet, the Scots 4 x 400 meter relay team of senior
Allison Pillar (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young), Smith, Prescott and Casarrubias placed second in 4:10.9.
The Scots will next compete, and host, at the Janis Rider Invitational on April 29.
