Women’s Track & Field: Macalester Starts Strong at Outdoor Opener

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's track and field team opened the outdoor season with a strong showing at the Hamline Invitational. The event featured more than a thousand athletes competing for 10 schools across Division I, II and III.

Junior Hannah Sonsalla (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) placed second in the 200-meter dash in 25.66 and finished fourth in the 400 meter dash in 57.80. Additionally, Sonsalla, first year Lily Schliemann (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou), and seniors Anik Regan (Tucson, Ariz./University) and Kara Komoto (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) placed seventh in the 4 x 100 meter relay in 50.10 seconds. Komoto earned a top 10 individual finish running 12.96 in the 100, good enough for ninth overall.

In the 100-meter hurdles, senior Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) finished 14th in 16.01 seconds. Sophomore Gabby Ivy (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) placed 16th and sophomore Amy Pelz (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) was 20th in the 400 meter hurdles, respectively running 1:10.14 and 1:11.75.

Senior Sarah Jo Devore (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) was third overall in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:46.9. Pelz placed 11th in the same event crossing in 12:40.1.

First year Victoria Casarrubias (Boulder, Colo. / Fairview) placed sixth in the 800 meter dash, crossing in 2:17.87.

In the 1500 meters, senior Eliza Ramsey (Olympia, Wash./Capital) broke five minutes for the first time, finishing in 4:52.65 to place 19th overall. The next three finishers from Macalester crossed the line within seconds of each other, with first year Lydia Simpson (Seattle, Wash./Nathan Hale) finishing in 5:10.76, senior Karlyn Russell (Monona, Wis./Monona Grove) finishing in 5:11.96, and first year Emma Maxtutis (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) finishing in 5:13.79.

Junior Clara Baumann (Wausau, Wis./Wausau) threw the javelin 37.36 meters (122-07) for sixth place. It was a PR effort and the first time javelin has been contested this season. Senior Meghan Klapper (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) placed 16th in the high jump, clearing 1.50 meters (4-11.0).

Senior Sarah Silbert (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) notched ninth place in the triple jump and 12th in the long jump with marks of 10.02 (32-10.05) and 4.80 (15-09), respectively.

In keeping with the spirit of the day, head coach Margaret Gehring was the winner of the caber toss. Long a feature of the Highland Games and the MIAC's newest event, the caber toss features competitors throwing very long, limbless logs. It was only fitting that the coach of the Scots should dominate.

The Scots will be in action next on Wednesday, April 12 at the Hamline Women's Meet.
