ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's track and field team took aim at the record book Friday night at the University of St. Thomas Showcase. Senior
Kimber Meyer (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) rewrote the 5000 meter run record by more than 15 seconds while the 4 x 400 meter relay won their event and set a new mark at 4:00.97. The high caliber meet featured 1600 athletes and serves a preview for the MIAC championships which will be held at St. Thomas February 24 and 25.
Meyer, who already holds the indoor mile record, placed third the event with a time of 17:47.47. Senior
Sarah Jo DeVore (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) came across in 11th overall and her time of 19:04.56 places her seventh on the indoor honor roll.
The record setting relay was composed of first year
Victoria Casarrubias (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), sophomore
Phoebe Aguiar (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East), senior
Anik Regan (Tucson, Ariz./University) and junior
Hannah Sonsalla (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), and now gives the Scots the leading time in the MIAC. The previous record was 4:01.56 set in 2013.
Sonsalla took second in her individual event, the 200 meter dash, clocking in at 26.13 which moves her into second on the school top 10 list. Casarrubias placed 3rd in the 400 meter dash with a time 1:00.13, a collegiate personal best.
In the 60 meter hurdles, senior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) finished third in 9.47. Senior
Kara Komoto (Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) took sixth in the 60 meter dash finals with a PR time of 8.08 seconds.
Senior
Megan Davitt (Albany, N.Y. / Bethlehem Central) finished 8th overall in the 3000 meter run, setting down a lifetime best by more than 15 seconds. Her 10:47.79 made her the first MIAC finisher in the event.
In the triple jump, senior
Sarah Silbert (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) and sophomore
Halla Dontje Lindell (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) placed 5th and 6th with jumps of 10.12 m (33-02.50) and 10.04 m (32-11.25), respectively.
Additionally, the team's assistant coach and 2016 Macalester graduate,
Sarah Jonathan ran unattached in the mile earning second overall and crossing the line in 5:07.49.
In their final tune-up before the conference championships, the Scots will head to the University of Minnesota Parent's Day Open Saturday February 18.
