RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Macalester men's cross country team made an impressive show taking first place at the UW-River Falls Invitational on Friday evening at Kilkarney Hills Golf Course. The Scots tallied 73 points, beating second place UW River Falls by 10 points. Next came the MIAC's Hamline (89) and Saint Mary's (114), both important teams to beat for the Scots. There were 10 teams competing.
The Scots top five runners finished in the top 25 overall and demonstrated excellent pack running with 62.2 seconds separating senior
Lachlan Hinwood (Colfax, Wis./Colfax) and first year
Jake Lepak (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS).
Hinwood, the team's top runner and sole scoring upperclassman, led the pack with an eighth-place overall finish. He completed the 8000 meter course in 27:05.5. Sophomore
Spencer Grant (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) came in 12th running 27:42.7. UW-River Falls' Daniel Borash was the individual winner posting a time of 26:35.0.
The number three runner for Macalester and 16th overall was first year
Henry Harper (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park) completing his 8000m debut in 27:46.9. Sophomore
Chris Boranian (Oakland, Calif./Head-Royce School) followed, crossing the line in 19th place overall in 27:57.6. Rounding out the scoring pack was Lepak, finishing 24th with a time of 28:07.7.
"The guys were shoulder to shoulder through the nitty gritty and had very passionate races down the home stretch," head coach
Matt Haugen said. "These guys love to push themselves, you can see it in their eyes. They're my dream team."
The team will compete again Thursday, September 15 at the Summit Cup hosted by St. Thomas University on Pike Island in St. Paul.
