Baseball: Macalester Alum Glasser Helps Team Israel Advance in World Baseball Classic

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Former Macalester College baseball standout Mitch Glasser '12 played for Team Israel in the qualifying round of the World Baseball Classic. Glasser and Team Israel defeated Great Britain, 9-1 on Sunday to clinch a berth in the 16-team World Baseball Classic, which begins in March of 2017.

In Sunday's qualifying round final, Glasser started at second base and doubled in the bottom of the seventh inning. He was 1-for-4 on the day. Glasser also played in Team Israel's 5-2 win over Great Britain on Thursday, and Friday's 1-0 victory over Brazil, both as a late defensive replacement.

While at Macalester, Glasser helped the Scots win the 2011 MIAC championship with a 16-4 conference record. A two-time All-MIAC infielder and an All-Region selection in 2011, he finished his collegiate career with 180 hits, 95 runs batted in, 109 runs scored and a .357 batting average in 148 games. Glasser, who struck out just four times in 246 at-bats over his final two seasons, made the Jewish Sports Review All-America team twice.

A native of Chicago, Ill., Glasser was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 2012 draft and played Rookie League ball for the Bristol White Sox. He spent the last two seasons with the Joplin Blasters of the American Association, batting .314 with 19 doubles and 47 RBI in 2016.

Team Israel will play in Pool B with Chinese Taipei, South Korea and the Netherlands March 7-10 in Seoul, South Korea.
