RIVER FALLS, Wis. – For the second year in a row, the Macalester College women's track and field team won the Falcon Winter Classic, hosted by UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon. The Scots totaled 164 points in the team standings, with the host Falcons taking second with 144 points.
First year
Phoebe Aguiar (Prairie Village, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) won the 600 meters (1:44.34) and helped the Scots win two relays. Aguiar, senior
Erin Porter (Aztec, N.M./Aztec), sophomore
Hannah Sonsalla (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and first year
Gabby Ivy (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) captured the 4x200 meter relay in 1:50.43. Aguiar, Porter, sophomore
Carmen Garson-Shumway (Hilo, Hawaii/Hilo) and first year
Alia Benedict (Manchester, Mich./Manchester) won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:22.52.
Sonsalla placed first in the 200 (26.73) and third in the 55 (7.69). In the mile, senior
Sarah Jonathan (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) won with a time of 5:23.93, followed by first year
Elena Smith (Eau Claire, Wis./Eau Claire Memorial) in second (5:27.40). Another distance runner, sophomore
Lorna Sherwood Caballero (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia HS of Arts) won the 3000 meters in 11:25.73.
Other solid performances on the track included a second-place finish by
Amy Pelz (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) in the 800, a second-place showing by Porter in the 400, and a third-place finish from Benedict in the 400. In the 1000 meters, sophomore
Kathrene Garcia (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) and first year
Hallie Kircher-Henning (Madison, Wis./Madison West) placed third and fourth, respectively. Junior
Brooke Hunter (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) finished third in the 55 meter high hurdles in 9.23.
The Scots turned in one first-place finish in the field events, with
Halla Dontje Lindell (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) winning the triple jump.
Macalester hosts the Hamster Invitational against Hamline University on Friday, Feb. 5 in the Leonard Center Fieldhouse.
