Women's Basketball: Fruh Lifts Macalester Past Pipers in OT, 71-70

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College women's basketball team opened up Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play in exciting fashion tonight. Regan Fruh capitalized on a three-point play with 0.3 seconds on the clock to lift the Scots over Hamline in a 71-70 overtime win.
 
With the win, Macalester improves to 5-2 overall and begins MIAC play with a 1-0 mark after registering their third straight win. Hamline University falls to 1-5 overall, 0-1 in the MIAC.
 
The game was a battle from start to finish. Hamline jumped out to a first quarter lead (19-14) but the Scots inched their way back and headed into the half down by just one (30-29).
 
Each team scored 17 points in the third quarter before Macalester took a late lead in the fourth, going up by four on a jumper by Leah Gray (San Rafael, Calif. / Branson School). The Pipers fought back and the score was tied with two minutes remaining.  With 16 seconds on the clock, Hamline's Chloe Graves knocked down two free throw attempts to put the Pipers up, 60-58. With time expiring, Gray got to the paint and laid a floater up and in to tie the game. The Scots got a stop on the defensive end to send the game into overtime.
 
The excitement continued in overtime as Hamline was able to gain a lead by as much as four points with just 1:30 remaining. Macalester battled back, with the offensive effort led by Regan Fruh (Helena, Mont. / Helena) who scored eight consecutive points for the Scots. The Scots held a one point lead when Chelsey Bonsante hit a three-pointer with 2 seconds on the clock to give Hamline a one-point advantage. Macalester called a time out and advanced the ball. The Scots inbounded a pass to Fruh on the block who turned and scored with time expiring. With a foul on the play, Fruh knocked down the free throw to secure a Macalester victory.
 
Macalester was led in scoring by Gray who made three shots from beyond the arc to score 18 points and grab nine rebounds. Regan Fruh and Park Masterson (Poway, Calif. / Poway) each added 13 points on the night. Masterson pulled down 16 rebounds.
 
Erin Murray (Sparta, Wis. / Sparta) dished out six assists.
 
Hamline was led by Chelsey Bonsante with 16 points.
 
Macalester will return to action on Saturday, December 5 when they travel to Winona, Minn. to take on Saint Mary's University in MIAC action. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
