Macalester (13-1-5), which is making its 12th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, won the MIAC regular-season championship with an 8-0-2 record before falling in the semifinals of the conference tournament to St. Thomas. That loss was the first and only defeat of the season for the Scots, whose 18-game unbeaten streak matched the 1997 squad that was 14-0-4 for the longest stretch in team history without a loss in one season. This is the first NCAA appearance for Macalester since 2010 and the first NCAA Tournament game at home since 2001.
St. Scholastica (18-2-1) received the automatic bid from the UMAC after defeating UW-Superior in the finals last Saturday. The Saints' two losses came against two of the other three teams playing at Macalester this weekend, with the Scots winning, 2-0 on Sept. 11 in Duluth. UW-Oshkosh (11-3-3), which beat St. Scholastica, 2-1 on Oct. 11, clinched the WIAC title with a 3-0-1 record, including a tie against UW-Whitewater on Oct. 24. St. Olaf (13-7-1) captured the MIAC playoff crown with a 2-0 victory over St. Thomas on Saturday. Macalester defeated St. Olaf, 2-1 on Oct. 3 at Macalester Stadium.
