ST. PAUL, Minn. – Three goals in the final 10 minutes and 29 seconds of the game gave the Macalester College men's soccer team a thrilling 3-2 victory over St. Thomas in a MIAC match Saturday afternoon at South Field. The Scots (7-0-5) remain unbeaten overall and improve to 3-0-2 in conference play, while the Tommies drop to 7-5, 3-3 MIAC.
St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Mark Heydt on a penalty kick in the 21st minute. Miles Stockman Willis scored his sixth goal of the season in the 77th minute to put the Tommies up, 2-0. Three minutes later, Macalester got on the scoreboard with a goal by junior forward
Charlie Spurr (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) off an assist by sophomore forward
Danny Baumann (Waterford, Wis./Muskego).
The roles were reversed just five minutes after Spurr's goal, as Spurr assisted on Baumann's first tally of the season that tied the score at 2-2 with just over five minutes left in regulation. With overtime and a possible sixth tie looming, Spurr received a long pass from sophomore midfielder
Jake Burke (Dublin, Ireland/Shattuck-St. Mary's) and tipped the ball past goalkeeper Grant Larson before shooting into an open goal to complete the improbable comeback. It was Spurr's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Macalester outshot St. Thomas, 14-6 for the game, as junior goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Melrose, Mass./Melrose) made three saves. Larson finished with five saves for the Tommies.
The Scots host St. Mary's on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in another MIAC contest. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium.
