ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester women's indoor track and field team hosted a season-opener triangular today in the Leonard Center's field house. The Scots placed first in team rankings among Augsburg, St. Catherine and Macalester alumni.
Head Coach
Margaret Gehring commented on the meet stating, "For our first meet, I am really pleased. We were not at full strength, but I am very optimistic about our future. We had nine alumni compete and many more come to cheer us on! It was great to have that kind of support surrounding the program."
Final women's team rankings through 14 events were as follows:
1) Macalester 69
2) Augsburg 40
3) St. Catherine 29
4) Macalester Alumni 3

Of the 14 events, Macalester was able to grab first place finishes in seven of those.
Freshman sprinter,
Hannah Sonsalla posted an 8.33 second 60-meter dash time to win the event and kick off the triangular.
Junior
Erin Ortiz won the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.46.
Anik Regan finished in second in 28.13.
Macalester's
Emily Diener won the 400-meter dash in 1:03.05.
Sophomore
Karlyn Russell grabbed the one-mile title with a 5:36.29 finish, crossing the line neck and neck with Macalester alumni Allie Woerpel.
The 4x400-meter relay team comprised of
Emily Diener,
Erin Ortiz,
Hannah Sonsalla and
Carmen Garson-Shumway took first place in the relay with a finals time of 4:18.45—finishing over five seconds faster than the second place St. Kate's team.
In field events,
Sarah Silbert won the triple jump with a score of 9.23m.
Zexin Nai took first in the shot put, throwing 9.44m.
The Macalester women's indoor track and field team will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31 as they travel to River Falls, Wis. to compete in the Falcon Winter Classic.
