The Macalester College men's track and field team knew it would need big performances in the field events to end the 2014 season on a high note at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Championships. Thanks to All-MIAC finishes from Logan Hovie (So., Neenah, Wis. / Neenah) and Mason Kriegel (Jr., Danbury, Wis. / Webster), the Scots finished the year with a strong 10th-place finish at the conference meet Saturday at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.

After finishing second at the indoor conference finale, Hovie needed to be at his best to move back in to the top spot in the MIAC in the men's high jump. The sophomore was able to do just that as he repeated as MIAC Champion with a jump of 2.02 meters (6-7.5) to highlight the Scots' perfomances Saturday. His mark was just of his season-best jump of 2.05 meters (6-8.75) and was a tenth of a meter (half an inch) better than the runner-up from Gustavus Adolphus College. Hovie has now placed at least second in all four of his appearances in the high jump at the MIAC Championships in his first two years as a Scot.

Kriegel opened up the MIAC Championships for the Scots with a huge fifth-place finish in the decathlon a week ago and continued to be a huge part of the Scots' success at the remainder of the meet. Kriegel earned All-MIAC honors as he tied for second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.47 meters (14-8) to match his second-place finish in the event from the decathlon. Ironically, he also tied in another event to score points for the Scots. His time of 11.286 in the 100-meter dash finals matched that of another competitor from Augsburg College. His time was just off his season-best time from his decathlon performance.

The other big finish for the Scots came from junior Konnor Fleming (Jr., Charlotte, Vt. / Champlain Valley Union) in the javelin. After heading into the event with the top mark in the MIAC, Fleming had a solid throw of 53.25 meters (174-8) to earn All-MIAC honors for the second-consecutive year with a third-place finish. The two competitors ahead of him included a first-year champion from St. Olaf and a former MIAC Champion in the event from Concordia College.

Other notable performances from the Scots came during Friday's events. In the 10,000-meter run Eric Biggers (Sr., Verona, Wis. / Verona) finished 10th and just outside of scoring position with a season-best time of 33:09.54. In the 400-meter hurdle prelims, Tayeb Zaidi (Fy., Oakland, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) had a PR time of 58.99, while Tre Nowaczynski (Fy., Hales Corners, Wis. / West Allis Central) had a PR of 23.24 in the 200-meter dash prelims.

The Scots placed 10th overall in the team standings with 28.5 points, while the University of St. Thomas repeated as the team champion. Additional information can be found on the MIAC Championships Site
