Softball: Scots tally 24 hits for huge MIAC sweep of St. Catherine

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
In front of a huge home crowd that gathered to support the Strike Out Heart Disease event, the Macalester College softball team put on a shows for its fans as it compiled 22 runs off 24 hits to take 7-0 and 15-3 victories over St. Catherine University for a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) sweep Friday evening in St. Paul.

The Scots received hits from 12 different batters including mutli-hit outings from seven Scots. Saraswati Wilson (Olathe, Kan. / Olathe Northwest) caused nightmares for the Wildcat pitchers as she went 4-for-7 at the plate with three RBI. In the process, she picked up a double and came across home plate four times. Miranda Stokes (Perry, Utah / Box Elder) also brought the heat as she went 3-for-6 on the day with two doubles for four RBI and three runs scored.

Stokes was not only extremely effective at the plate, she also shut down the Wildcat hitters in the first game allowing just four hits and no runs with four strike outs for her second shutout win in three days. Brittany Ehmann (Lake Island, Ill. / Wauconda) came in during game one to record her second save of the season. She faced 11 batters and allowed no hits to seal the victory for the Scots. Alisha Barritt (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Oklahoma School of Science & Math) picked up her fourth win of the season in the game two win.

The first game opened in exciting fashion for the Scots as Hali Englert (Castle Rock, Colo. / Castle View) hit a screaming line drive to left field that barely cleared the fence for her fourth home run of the season. The Scots then poured on the runs in the the third as Stokes hit a two-RBI double before Cleo Nagy (Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) gave the Scots fans something to cheer about with a base-clearing three-run home to bring in Stokes and Abby Cox (Fort Worth, Tex. / Fort Worth Country Day) to take a 6-0 lead. Ehmann then picked up an RBI single in the fifth to bring Cox around for her second of three runs on the day.

In game two, the Scots got to work right away scoring two runs in the first before putting together an unbelieveable second inning that saw 10 runners cross home plate on seven hits for a 12-0 lead. The Wildcats added three runs in the fifth inning in an attempt to salvage the game, but not before the Scots tallied 15 runs for their highest total in a single game this season.

Englert finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while Cox also picked up three hits on the day. Nikki Caicedo (Clinton Township, Mich. / Chippewa Valley) and Anna Munson (La Crosse, Wis. / Central) each picked up a hit and three walks with Munson crossing home for three runs on the day. Nagy, Ehmann and Erin Slater (Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur) also finished the day with two hits a piece.

With the wins, the Scots improve to 7-9 in MIAC play and return to action Sunday against Saint Mary's University for a 1 p.m. doubleheader in Winona, Minn.
