ST. PAUL, Minn -- Macalester saw its chances for a playoff spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference take a blow with a 1-0 loss to Concordia.
With Bethel defeating Gustavus Adolphus, earlier Wednesday, the Scots now sit in seventh in the MIAC standings, two points behind the Royals, who will be at ninth-place St. Catherine, Saturday. Macalester will need to win its game at St. Mary's, Saturday, and have Bethel to lose to the Wildcats and St. Olaf fall at Carleton, in order to finish in sixth place and grab the final playoff position.
Wednesday's game saw the teams battle through 70 minutes of scoreless play before Laura Prosinski pushed a ball through the middle to her sister, Marta, at the top of the 18-yard box. Marta then dribbled the ball into the penalty box and pushed a shot past Macalester goalkeeper
Emma Toomer and inside the right post at 71 minutes, three seconds, and the Cobbers held on from that point.
After putting eight of its 10 shots in the first half on goal, the Scots were not able to get a single shot to the next in the second half despite six attempt. Concordia, meanwhile, attempted 17 shots and put eight on goal.
Hannah Walker led both teams with five shots. Both she and
Bonnie Gale, who attempted four shots, led all players with three shots on goal.
Macalester will close out the regular season, Saturday, when it faces St. Mary's in a 1 p.m. game in Winona, Minn.
