The University of Northwestern-St. Paul held off visiting Macalester in a game that was close throughout and improved to 3-0 with a 52-49 victory Tuesday night over the Scots. Macalester drops to 1-2 after getting out-scored 29-19 in the second half.
For the third straight game to start the campaign, Macalester was led by
Veronika Jakubovie (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.). Jakubovie with with 10 points and also contributed seven rounds. Just falling short of double figures were
Emma Leyden (Sr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) with nine points,
Taylor Pike (Sr., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) with eight and
Erin Murray (So., Sparta, Wis.) with seven. The team's top rebounders were Jakubovie (7) and
Annie Drabot (Jr., Cedarburg, Wis.) with six.
Macalester was 11-for-14 on free throws, but just 3-for-16 on three-pointers. The Scots led 24-13 in points off turnovers, 17-12 in second-chance points and 12-5 in bench scoring. Mac grabbed 19 offensive rebounds, compared to six for the Eagles. Macalester led 29-23 at halftime.
Northwestern was led by Jessica Fife with 17 points and four steals.
Macalester begins MIAC play Thursday (Nov. 21) when it plays host to St. Mary's at 7:30 p.m. at the Leonard Center.
