Martha Nause to step down as golf coach at end of season

Coach Martha Nause
Macalester College men's and women's head golf coach Martha Nause has announced that she is stepping down from coaching at the end of the current Spring season after 12 years at Macalester.  Head coach of the Macalester's men's team since 2000-01 and women's coach since the following year, Nause is planning to spend more time with family and to pursue other professional golf opportunities.

Nause has coached at Macalester since retiring from a very successful 22 year career on the LPGA Tour and plans to continue to play on the LPGA Legends Tour.  “I'm looking at playing in four to five tournaments this year as well as play in the qualifier for the U.S. Women's Open, and this will give me time to prepare and to practice,” says Coach Nause.

“I don't see this as much of a retirement as it is stepping away to do other things.  After playing on the tour, this has been a wonderful second career for me.  My time here at Macalester has been full of great adventures and I can't describe how much I've enjoyed coaching the Mac student-athletes.  I have learned a lot from my time here and I will miss the day-to-day interactions with the golfers.”

“Due to added family demands, it became harder and harder to devote the necessary time to the daily running of the programs so I'm happy to be able to have that additional time for family as I move forward.”

Nause was named 2006-07 MIAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year after guiding the Scots to their best finish ever, and has coached numerous All- Conference golfers and multiple NCAA Division III championship participants, including four All-Americans.  She is currently the chair of the NCAA Division III Women's Golf Committee.

A three-time winner on the LPGA tour, Nause won the prestigious du Maurier Ltd. Classic, an LPGA major championship, in 1994.  She won on the Legends Tour in 2006 at the Hy-Vee Classic, and most recently played in the U.S. Women's Open in 2008 and 2010.  Nause is in the St. Olaf College Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame.
