Macalester needed a pair of wins against the Cobbers Tuesday in Moorhead to gain a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) title. The Scots pulled off a 7-6 win in 13 innings in a game-one thriller, and then beat Concordia 14-1 in the nightcap to claim the MIAC championship for the first time since 1950.
The Scots finish the regular season at 25-12 and with the most wins in school history, and tie St. Thomas for first place in the conference standings at 16-4. It's been a very long stretch of 61 years since Macalester's first and most-recent MIAC championship.
The Scots pounded out 34 hits on the day.
Game one was one of the team's most exciting wins of the season as Mac kept its pennant hopes alive.
Garrett Salzman (Jr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) went 5-for-7 from the plate, driving in two runs in the ninth which didn't hold up, and then driving in
Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) with the an RBI single to center which this time did hold up.
Pitcher
Alex Ingram (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) collected the win in both games to improve to 8-1 on the season with a workhorse effort. Ingram pitched the final 6 2/3 innings in relief in game one and collected another win by pitching the first four innings of the nightcap. On the day, Ingram threw 10 2/3 innings, giving up just two runs, eight hits and one walk, while striking out 11. He lowers his ERA to 2.60 to go along with his 8-1 record.
In addition to getting a 5-for-7 performance in the first contest, the Scots also received a 4-for-5 effort from
Jimmy Belfont (So., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel). In game two,
Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) was 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBI to boost his batting average to .418. Salzman added three more hits to finish the day 8-for-11 and is batting .425. The Cobbers were held to just three hits in the game.
Co-Champ Macalester heads to the MIAC Playoffs Friday-Sunday (May 13-15) as the No. 2 seed and will play Friday against No. 3 Hamline at 7:00 p.m. In Friday's early game in this double-elimination tournament, No. 1 St. Thomas takes on No. 4 St. John's. Mac is making its first MIAC playoff appearance since 2000. The tourney winner gets a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The MIAC tourney will be played at Veterans Field in Minnetonka. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for students.
