Janis Rider Invitational meet website with complete results
Macalester will host the inaugural Janis Rider Invitational women's track & field meet on Saturday (April 30) at Macalester Stadium. This event – formerly the Macalester Invitational – is dedicated to the memory of Macalester assistant track & field coach and M Club Hall of Fame athlete Janis Rider, who passed away unexpectedly August 23, 2010 while vacationing in Hawaii. The naming ceremony will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Leonard Center Field House (enter South doors). with the running events getting underway at 12:15 p.m.
Janis was a three sport standout in volleyball, basketball, and track & field at Mac. As an alumna, Janis maintained strong ties and service to the college as an assistant volleyball coach and as an assistant track & field coach for 11 years.
In track & field, she was an outstanding, nationally-competitive thrower and was the NCAA III national javelin champion as a senior in 1988, the same year she placed fourth nationally in the shot put. She was a four-time All-American and earned 12 All-Conference titles. Janis ranks third on Macalester's women's basketball all-time rebounding list and seventh on the all-time basketball point scoring chart.
Janis was an attorney for the Minnesota State Legislature, helping to craft the language of proposed bills as an employee in the Office of the Revisor of Statutes, a department that provides services to members of both houses of the legislature, as well as all constitutional offices, state agencies, and departments.
Janis was an avid supporter of Macalester. For many years, she served as a director in the M Club, the college's alumni organization supporting Macalester varsity athletics. In naming this meet the Janis Rider Invitational, we are honoring her commitment and legacy to Macalester College.
