Kus:
“I'm studying abroad in Bamako, Mali (West Africa). I am doing SIT's (School for International Training) program titled “Health, Gender and Community Empowerment.” This program fits well with my major (Anthropology) because it allows me to do field work. During the last four weeks of the program, we conduct our own Independent Study Project (ISP) on any topic of our choice. Also, Mali is a former French colony so most of our classes are taught in French. This helps me to complete my French and Francophone Studies minor.

“The weather in Mali has recently become hotter and hotter. It's 100+ degrees here every day!! I'm from the South so I'm used to hot, humid summers. But I've never been in weather this hot before. I sometimes wonder how Malians manage to deal with the heat here.

“I've been juggling and kicking around the ball with my 16, nine, and five year old host brothers. I brought them a soccer ball as a gift. I've watched soccer on TV here every day since I've been with my host family, without fail. My 16-year-old host brother always has the TV on the soccer channels.”
