Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hosts events for National Student-Athlete Day

National Student-Athlete Day recognizes the accomplishments of student-athletes nationwide who excel in the classroom, on the playing fields and in their communities. National Student-Athlete Day was created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) and the Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport in Society, with partnership from the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations. NCAA involvement began in 1994. NCAA member institutions are encouraged to recognize outstanding student-athletes.

The Macalester Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted several events last Saturday (April 10) to celebrate National Student-Athlete Day. A barbeque with endless amounts of Scot Dogs were served during the softball game versus St. Mary's and the men's tennis match versus St. John's. Commemorative National Student-Athlete Day T-shirts and cups were also given away, with designs by volleyball player, Taylor Tinkham '11. Between softball games, M Club President, Steve Cox, and Football Player, Pete Goldberg '11, competed in an exciting Scot-Dog-eating competition. Although Mr. Cox started with an empty stomach, Goldberg triumphed, eating five Scot Dogs in just a few minutes.

Together with Kilt Krew, SAAC also hosted a dance, “Scot Ball”, in the Leonard Center Atrium. Students from Mac DJ's spun popular tracks from 2000 to 2010 while students danced the night away. Scot Ball also raised funds for Special Olympics Minnesota. In order for DJ's to play music past the year 2000, students made donations to “buy out” of each year. As students raised increments of $100, music progressed year-by-year. In all, students raised over $700 for the organization devoted to providing sports competition opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities.
