Macalester Day 1 recap

After opening the College Water Polo Association (CWPA) “West vs. Central” tournament in Pittsburgh on Friday with a win over host-Chatham, the Scots played three more games Saturday, taking on Grove City (Pa.), Washington & Jefferson (Pa.) and Wheaton (Ill.).

Macalester lost to Grove City 14-7 before dropping a 15-14 heartbreaker to Washington & Jefferson and 15-11 decision to Wheaton.

Grove City controlled the early going and was on top 6-0 before Mac got on the board with the first of four Sarah Ellerton (Sr., Suffield, Conn. / Suffield Academy) goals.

The team's second match was close throughout. Washington & Jefferson led 5-4 after the first quarter. The score was deadlocked 8-8 at halftime and 11-11 after three quarters of play. Catherine Flint (So., Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) tied the score at 13-13. W&J netted the next two scores before Ellerton brought Scots to within a point with 1:10 to play.

Ellerton had six goals for Mac and Flint scored four. Ramona McCabe (So., Santa Cruz, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley) contributed a pair of goals.

Against Wheaton, Ellerton produced six goals and Jillian Benson (Jr., Evanston Township, Ill. / Evanston Township).  The Crusaders led 10-5 at halftime.
