Scots go 6-4 in Arizona; Murrey sets strikeout mark

The Scots went 6-4 over Spring Break in the Phoenix area and return to St. Paul with an 11-5 overall record.  The trip's highlight was an 18-strikeout performance by James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township), who tied a 73-year school record with his 18 K's.   Murrey fanned 29 batters in 16 innings pitched on the trip.  Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) batted .438 (14-for-32).  Nate Wilson-Traisman (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) hit .394 and Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) batted .389 with a .778 slugging percentage.

Friday, March 12
Monmouth (Ill.) 4, Macalester 3 | box score

Macalester took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth inning, but Monmouth (Ill.) got a walk-off hit in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Scots 4-3 in Chandler, Ariz., as Mac's 10-game Spring Break trip got off to rough start.

Alex Ingram (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) started and pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up just a couple runs and a walk, and Jack Cooper (Jr., Alexandria, Va. / T.C. Williams) pitched two good innings out of the bullpen. Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

James Murrey
In 1937, Macalester College's Rex Kern fanned 18 batters in a single game. Today, James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) matched that 73-year-old mark by striking 18 batters in eight innings of work, leading the Scots to a 10-inning 1-0 win over No. 30-ranked Johns Hopkins. Murrey allowed just four hits and Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Nate Wilson-Traisman (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) doubled in Devin English (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) to cap a two-out rally in the bottom of the 10th inning for the game's only run.

In game one, the Scots were held to just three hits as JHU moved to 5-0 on the season.

Sunday, March 14:
Concordia (Ill.) 13, Macalester 9 | box score

In a game filled with 37 hits, Concordia University of Chicago came up with three eighth-inning runs and four more runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Scots 13-9 in Chandler, Ariz., as Macalester drops to 1-3 on its Spring Break trip. Concordia had a pair of players with four hits on the game.

Garrett Salzman (So., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) had three hits, including his second home run of the year, to lead Macalester. Five teammates added two hits apiece.

Monday, March 15:
Macalester 22, Dickinson (Pa.) 15 | box score
The Scots tallied 13 third-inning runs to go up 19-0 but had to hold off a Dickinson comeback in a contest featuring 33 hits, 22 walks and five errors.  Mac leadoff batter Graham Brown (So., Annandale, Minn.) went 1-for-1 with four runs scored and four RBI, and Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) drove in six runs on a pair of homers.

Brown and Williams belted grand slams in the big Macalester third inning.

Wednesday, March 17:

Springfield (Mass.) 8, Macalester 5 | box score

Alex Ingram (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) was strong through six inning and Nick Meerson (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) picked up the save and preserved the shutout as Springfield managed just six hits in the opening game of a doubleheader. This was Macalester's second shutout on the trip. Three Scots had a pair of hits apiece: Nate Wilson-Traisman (Sr., Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene), Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) and Will Chen (Jr., Edina, Minn.).

Macalester out-hit Springfield 10-9 in game two but fell by an 8-5 tally. Wilson-Traisman and Mitch Glasser each drove in a couple runs for the Scots.

Thursday, March 18:
Macalester 6, Concordia (Wis.) 3 | box score

The Scots went up 4-0 following a three-run fourth inning and James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) followed up his 18-strikeout effort vs. Johns Hopkins with another 11 K's in eight innings of work. The NCAA Division III national pitcher of the week finishes his Arizona trip with 29 strikeouts in 16 innings.

Macalester out-hit Concordia 18-6 and received three hits apiece from four different players: Graham Brown (So., Annandale, Minn.), Devin English (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) and Garrett Salzman (So., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis).

Friday, March 19:

Macalester pounded out 17 hits, including four doubles and a triple. The Scots posted six runs in the top of the first inning to take control and put things away with four in both the sixth and seven frames. Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) drove in four runs on a couple hits, including a triple. Bobby De Meulenaere (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) and Garrett Salzman (So., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) each drove in three runs, while DeMeulenaere also scored three runs.

Elliott Yodh (Jr., Merion, Pa. / Lower Merion) pitched Macalester to a 2-1 win over Minot State (N.D.) as the Arizona trip came to a successful finish. The Scots won despite being held to just three hits as Yodh went the distance, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out four. The Scots scored the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Roberto Capriotti (Fy., Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair).
