Macalester's
Stephanie Schleuder is approaching a major career milestone as she is just one victory short of her 700th collegiate volleyball head coaching win. The Scots gave the 12-year Mac head coach win No. 699 last weekend at the Augsburg Invitational and the first try for No. 700 is Wednesday night (Sept. 18) at the Leonard Center when the Scots host Gustavus Adolphus for their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener.
Schleuder, who began her head coaching career in 1972 at Bemidji State, and later coached at the University of Alabama and the University of Minnesota before arriving at Macalester in 1998, is about to become the 13th active coach in college volleyball at any division to reach 700 wins. In the history of women's college volleyball, only 22 thus far have achieved 700 head coaching wins.
There are only two active NCAA Division III coaches in the 700 Win Club.
Wednesday's matches with Gustavus, however, will be a tall task because the Gusties are very talented. They went 26-5 last season, finished second in the MIAC, and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
If the Scots come up short, they will have three more opportunities to hand Schleuder the milestone achievement when they host the Macalester Invitational Friday and Saturday (Sept. 18-19). Mac will take on Dubuque, Oklahoma Wesleyan and Grinnell.
