The Student Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) from Macalester and St. Thomas are working together to organize a food and fund drive during the football game between Macalester and St. Thomas on Saturday, September 5th.
Donations will go to a local food bank in St. Paul, Second Harvest Heartland, the largest food bank in the upper-Midwest. Second Harvest Heartland serves 59 counties in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin. For every $1 donated Second Harvest Heartland is able to distribute $9 worth of food based on the partnerships it has with local businesses.
The Macalester SAAC has previously hosted food and fund drives for Second Harvest Heartland during basketball games. Last winter 100 pounds in food and an additional $160 were collected, an equivalent of approximately 703 meals. With the support of the Macalester and St. Thomas communities we hope to improve upon this! Our goals for this year is to collect the equivalent of 1000 meals.
Donations (either food or money) will be collected during the game on September 5th. If you are unable to attend the game but are near the Macalester campus, donations boxes will be located at sites around campus, including the Leonard Center, Weyerhaeuser, and Olin-Rice during the week of August 31st thru September 4th. If you are unable to reach campus during this time but are still interested in donating, online donations can be made at:
