Amanda Cagan (Jr., Saratoga, Calif. / Monta Vista) went 3-for-3 in the first game and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Macalester rallied from behind to beat visiting St. Catherine 4-3, but the Wildcats came back to gain the split with a 3-0 victory in game two. This is Macalester's third straight MIAC split after going 1-1 recently with Carleton and St. Benedict.
The Scots are now 8-22 on the year, 3-13 in the MIAC. St. Kate's goes to 10-16 overall and 9-5 in the league.
In the first contest, St. Catherine posted single runs in the first two innings before Macalester tied things with a pair of fourth inning runs. Cagan started in inning with a double and the Scots received RBI singles from
Chloe Souza (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Windward) and
Alison Phillips (Jr., Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson).
The Wildcats re-gained the advantage with a single run in the top of the fifth, but the Scots responded with two more runs in their half of the fifth on a
Natalie Clifford (Fy., Woodbury, Minn. / Trinity) double,
Ali Nystrom (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) single, and game-winning single by Cagan.
Olivia Abbott (Jr., Lakewood, Colo. / Green Mountain) was solid in the circle, scattering eight hits while striking out four to improve to 6-9 on the season.
Amanda Knopf (Fy., Boulder, Colo.) also pitched well in the nightcap, striking out a season-best eight batters. The Wildcats, however, kept the home team off the scoreboard despite seven hits.
Macalester plays host to Concordia-Moorhead Saturday (April 18) at 11 a.m.
