Three Scots win events at Macalester’s Pre-MIAC Meeting; Ekstrom breaks another record

Complete Pre-MIAC Meeting results

Macalester hosted the Pre-MIAC Meeting Friday night at Leonard Center for its final tune-up for next weekend's conference championships. The Scots competed with Carleton, Bethel, Hamline, Gustavus and Concordia-Moorhead in this non-scored event. This was the first official meet in Mac's new Leonard Center.

Martin Stenman-Andersson (Jr., Uppsala, Sweden / IT-Gymnasiet Uppsala), Wade Ekstrom (Jr., La Crescent, Minn.) and Ollie St. John (Fy., Washington, D.C. / Edmund Burke School) won events to lead the Scots, while Kevin Williams (Sr., Kingston, Jamaica) turned in a standout runner-up effort in the 55 dash. Overall, it was a very good meet for the host Scots.

Stenman-Anderson placed first in the long jump (20-0 ¼ / 6.33m), Eckstrom battled Bethel All-American Dan Greeno and pulled away decisively for an exciting victory in the 1-mile run (4:17.74), and St. John won top honors in the 1000 meters (2:37.99).

Ekstrom's 4:17.74 break's one of the oldest Macalester school records, smashing the 29-year-old 1980 mark of 4:19.1 set by Paul Mausling.  Just a week earlier, at the University of Minnesota Snowshoe Open, Ekstrom broke a 10-year-old school mark when he ran an 8:39.01 in the 3000-meter run.

Williams placed second, by just 1/100 second, in the finals of the 55-meter dash (6.64) after turning in the third-best time out of 24 entrants in the prelims (6.75).

Andrew Yokom (Sr., Arden Hills, Minn. / Mounds View) was third out of 32 in the one-lap 200-meter dash (22.96). Franz Meyer (Sr., Kirkwood, Mo.) took third, right behind St. John, in the 1000 meters (2:41.60). Wade Miller (Sr., Alden, Minn. / Alden-Conger) placed sixth in the 35-pound weight throw (42-9 ¾ / 13.05m) and Carl Biggers (Fy., Verona, Wis.) was sixth in the 3000 meters (9:14.31).

The Scots are at the MIAC indoor championships Friday and Saturday (March 6-7) at Concordia College in Moorhead.
