Mac soccer teams earn national academic honors

NSCAA Team Academic Award winners

Macalester's men's and women's soccer teams have earned the 2009 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award. The 3.63 collective grade point average (GPA) registered by the Mac women's team is first among all Division III teams and the 3.43 produced by the men's team during the 2008-09 academic year is ranked No. 4 among NCAA Division III institutions.

The women, under head coach John Leaney, posted the fourth best team GPA among all collegiate women's teams from all divisions, and the men, under head coach Ian Barker, is ranked ninth best among all men's teams.

A total of 576 soccer teams (143 men's teams, 333 women's teams) in all NCAA and NAIA divisions posted team GPAs of 3.00 or higher on a 4.00 scale during the 2008-09 academic year to earn NSCAA Team Academic Award honors. Macalester is one of 99 institutions to have both their men's and women's programs recognized.

Five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) women's soccer teams and five men's teams have earned this award. Macalester, Carleton College and St. Olaf all received the award for both their men's and women's programs.
