Whitworth rallies past Macalester 67-61

Whitworth University (Wash.) rallied past Macalester 67-61 Saturday afternoon in the third annual Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Sherwood Center on the Whitman College campus in Walla Walla, Wash. Whitworth trailed by 10 points midway through the second half, but took its first lead of the game with 4:50 remaining and re-gained the advantage for good with just 1:45 left to play.

The Scots, who also dropped a narrow decision the night before to host-Whitman, are 0-2 going into their home-opener Tuesday (Nov. 24) against Wisconsin-River Falls. Whitworth is now 1-1 after closing out the game on a 28-12 run. The Pirates out-scored the Scots 25-4 in points off turnovers.

Majra Mucic (Jr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) and Ann Baltzer (Sr., Bismarck, N.D.) each posted double-doubles to lead the Scots, who out-rebounded Whitworth 52-31. Mucic finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Baltzer added 10 points and 10 boards.

Trina PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) added to the Macalester cause with 10 points and six rebounds. PaStarr, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's game against Whitman, was named to the all-tournament team.

Maggie Wood (So., Oregon, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) chipped in with 10 points. Danielle Johnson (Sr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) and Eartha Bell (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck School) each had four assists and two steals.

Heather Burke drilled three of Whitworth's seven 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Kim Bluff made both of her 3-point attempts and was good for 10 points. Katie Delaney and Liz Horiatis mirrored one another with six rebounds and five assists.

The tournament honors the memory of Kim Evanger Raney, a graduate of Issaquah (Wash.) High School who played basketball at Whitman, graduating in 2002 with a degree in psychology. She died in March of 2007 in cycling accident.
