Late rally falls short against Whitman

Macalester vs. Whitman statistics

Host Whitman edged Macalester 62-59 at the Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Walla Walla, Washington, in the season-opener for both teams. A year ago at this time, Whitman traveled to Macalester's home floor and came away with an 83-79 victory.

Down by 12 points with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second half, the Scots got back into the contest with a final push and cut the Whitman lead to a single point at 60-59 when Majra Mucic (Jr., Zenica, Bosnia / St. Louis Park – Minn.) nailed a three-pointer with five seconds to go. The Missionaries, however, clinched the game with late free throws.

PaStarr (Sr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for Macalester. She was 8-for-11 from the floor in the second half for 16 points. Mucic added eight points and five rebounds off the bench.

The Scots hustled for 18 offensive rebounds and gained a 16-6 advantage in second chance points.  Danielle Johnson (Sr., DeForest, Wis. / Madison Edgewood) handed out six assists and also collected six boards.  Macalester went 14-for-18 from the free throw line.

Jenele Peterson paced Whitman with 16 points and four assists.

The Scots play Saturday in Walla Walla against Whitworth (Wash.).
