Macalester's volleyball team recently held its annual team dinner and named the following season award winners:
Marie Godwin, senior, Chaska, Minn., was voted the Most Valuable Player for the Scots. Marie played in all 74 sets for the Scots this season. She finished with a team high 210 digs and surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark during the season. Marie was second in kills for the team, ending her career with 372. For her career, Marie played in 321 sets for the Scots. More than anything, Marie contributed leadership and intensity for the team. Marie has also been a leader off the court with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), where she has chaired both the Macalester group and the Region SAAC representing Minnesota and Iowa to the NCAA National SAAC.
Majra Mucic, junior right side hitter for Zenica, Bosnia, and St. Louis Park (Minn.) H.S., was named Best Offensive Player for the Scots. Majra played in all 74 sets for the Scots and racked up a team-leading 193 kills with 2.61 kills per set and a team leading hitting percentage of .203. Majra also contributed 52 total blocks and tallied .07 blocks per set which was second on the team. With her combined hitting and blocking, Majra averaged 3.09 points per set for Mac.
Kiera Coulter, junior libero from Davis, Calif., and
Glasha Marcon, first-year ibero/defensive specialist from Richmond, Calif., share the Co-Defensive Player of the Year Award. Kiera started the year as one of the team's setters, but after 12 matches transitioned to the Libero position where she totaled 167 digs and 2.26 digs per set. Coulter also added 15 service aces while making only 17 reception errors for the whole season. In her first year with the squad, Glasha tallied 188 digs (second on the team) and 2.54 digs per set. She also burned 21 service aces (also second on the team) while committing only 24 reception errors for the year. Both Kiera and Glasha competed in all 74 sets for the Scots.
Erin Cusac, senior middle hitter from Pine River, Minn., was honored with the Coaches Award. This award is given to the player who best exemplifies the spirit of team play, determination and dedication to the team. In addition to these qualities, Erin has played almost every position for the Scots during her four year career while playing in almost every match during her career. She accepted each and every assignment as a challenge to be conquered.
Mac seniors
Marie Godwin and
Erin Cusac are honored for their major contributions to the volleyball program over the span of the past four years. Both players have been fixtures on the court for the Scots, competing in almost every match of the Scots during their careers. Marie played Libero her first year for the Scots, but then shifted to outside hitter. She finished her career with 1,059 digs, 321 kills and 88 service aces. Marie's dig total puts her in fifth place all-time for career digs at Mac. Erin played outside hitter, middle hitter, right side hitter and some as defensive specialist. She ended her career at Mac with 404 kills, 93 total blocks, 570 digs and 30 service aces.
Jessica Baier, sophomore defensive specialist from Seeley Lake, Mont., was named to the MIAC All-Sportsmanship Team by a vote of her team members. Jessica is admired for her work ethic and the support she gives her teammates.
Kiera Coulter and
Jessica Baier were voted by the team and coaches to lead the Scots as team co-captains for the 2010 season.
