Scots win Macalester Invite 2; take first in nine events

The Scots claimed top team honors over the weekend at the Macalester Invitational 2 at Leonard Natatorium's Riley Pool. The Scots were first out of six teams with 631 ½ points, while St. Benedict (439) edged St. Catherine (401 ½) for second. Macalester placed first in two relays and seven individual events in this 23-event competition, and turned in 1-2-3 sweeps in the 400-yard individual medley and 200 backstroke.

This was the team's final prep for the Feb. 19-21 MIAC championships.

Hillary Frey (Fy., Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) won the 400-yard IM and 200 back. She won the 400 IM finals in 4:54.58 on Friday and the next evening took first in the 200 back finals with a 2:10.42 clocking. Annie Flanagan (Sr., Madison, Wis. / East) added two more first-place finishes to her terrific senior diving season, winning on the 3-meter board (433.75) and 1-meter board (409.55).

Kate Vermann (So., Bronx, N.Y. / Fieldston School) earned the top time in the 1,650-yard freestyle (19:22.87), Grace Fleming (Fy., Northampton, Mass.) won the 500 free (5:25.96) and Karoline Hart (Fy., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke (31.98).

Mac won the 800-yard freestyle (8:31.6) and 400 medley relay (4:21.70). Swimming on the 800 free relay were Clare Pillsbury (Fy., Baraboo, Wis.), Vermann, Angie Marvin (Sr., Warroad, Minn.) and Fleming. Making up Mac's winning 400 medley relay were Pillsbury, Hart, Kiersten Yeazel (So., Shorewood, Wis.) and Alex Cortes (Sr., Berkely, Calif. / Head-Royce).

Macalester runner-up swimmers were Cortes in the 100 back (1:04.58), Pillsbury in the 50 back (30.70), Fleming in the 400 IM and Anna Gajewski (Jr., Wausau, Wis. / East) in the 1650 freestyle (20:15.07). The Scots picked up seven third-place finishes over the weekend, including a couple from Claire Eder (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) in the 50 back (30.82) and 100 back (1:05.17).
