Karoline Hart (Fy., Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) swam to first place finishes in the two breaststroke events to lead Macalester to a third-place finish Friday and Saturday at the eight-team Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Ia.

Hart placed first in the 100 breaststroke finals Friday in2:32.85 and backed that up the next day with another win in the finals of the 100 breast with a mark of 1:09.81. The Scots were third out of eight teams and in addition to getting wins from Hart, picked up four second-place finishes and seven thirds.

Luther claimed the team championship over host-Grinnell, while Macalester was well-clear of fourth-place Augustana (Ill.).

Hillary Frey (Fy., Portland, Ore. / St. Mary's Academy) and Claire Eder (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) contributed second-place finishes to the Macalester cause. Frey was second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:54.64) and Eder took runner-up honors in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.46).

Frey was also third in the finals of the 200 IM (2:19.70), while Macalester also received third-place finishes from Alex Cortes (Sr., Berkeley, Calif. / Head-Royce) in the 50 freestyle (26.31), Clare Pillsbury (Fy., Baraboo, Wis.) in the 200 back behind teammate Eder, and Grace Fleming (Fy., Northampton, Mass.) in the 1650-yard freestyle (18:55.08).

Fourth place Macalester finishers were Fleming in the 500 free (5:28.36), Eder in the 100 back (1:05.93), Cortes in the 100 free (56.73) and Frey in the 200 back (2:22.87).

Mac was second in the 800 freestyle relay (8:26.13) and 400 free relay (3:48.15) and third in three other relays.  800 freestyle relay members were Pillsbury, Frey, Cortes and Fleming. Swimming on the 400 free relay were Hart, Cortes, Fleming and Frey.

The Scots host St. Thomas on Friday (Jan. 23) at Riley Pool and compete at the St. Catherine Invitational Saturday (Jan. 24).
