Nathan Young (So., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) continued his preparation for his defense of his conference backstroke crowns a month from now by winning the 100-yard backstroke in 52.12 and 200 back in 1:54.62 over the weekend at the Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Ia. Macalester placed fourth in the seven-team competition.

Young, last week's MIAC men's swimming and diving athlete of the week, nearly claimed a third victory, but had to settle for second place in the 100-yard freestyle (47.70). His win in the 200 back finals was by an easy 11 seconds.

The Scots had a pair of finalists in the 50-yard freestyle, where Young placed fourth (22.81) and Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani) finished sixth (23.23).

Luther took the team title over Grinnell. Iowa Central was third, while the Scots edged Augustana (Ill.) for fourth.

The Scots host St. Thomas on Friday (Jan. 23) at Riley Pool and compete at the St. Catherine Invitational Saturday (Jan. 24).
