The Macalester Scots had their best showing ever at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional tournament over the weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Several Mac players and doubles teams advanced in this highly-competitive tourney which featured many of the top NCAA Division III players in the nation. Two Macalester doubles teams gained rare wins over opponents from MIAC and national powerhouse Gustavus.

In the ITA doubles draw, Macalester's Charlie Edelman (Sr., Tucson, Ariz. / University) and Michael Coleman (So., Westlake Village, Calif. / Agoura) won matches over pairs from Gustavus in easy 8-3 fashion and the No. 4-ranked regional team from Luther 9-7 before falling in the quarter-finals to Carleton by a narrow 9-7 margin.

Edelman and Coleman became the first Mac doubles teams to reach the ITA quarter-finals at this annual event for the Scots. They fell by a 9-7 score in the fourth round. Macalester first-years Chris Fowler (Toronto, Ont. / Royal St. George's) and Ali Bandaeli (Karachi, Pakistan / Karachi Grammar School) gained a 9-8 victory over a team from Gustavus.

Fowler gained singles-draw wins in the first two rounds over players from Concordia (Wis.) and St. Olaf before bowing out in round three to a player from Gustavus. Edelman also had a victory in singles play before going down in the second round in a close 6-4, 6-4 match.
