Macalester Men's and Women's Golf Week 3 Update
Last Thursday, the Macalester men's and women's golf teams were caught playing in a harsh rainstorm during practice; little did they know it would serve as good preparation for the weekend's play. The constant rain and cold conditions all weekend long didn't slow down Macalester's golf teams as players on both the men's and women's teams placed highly in their respective tournaments.
Jordan Matheson '09 led the women's team at the Division III Midwest Classic played at Majestic Oaks Golf Club (Ham Lake, Minn.), recording rounds of 78 and 80 to finish in a tie for second place, one stroke out of the lead.
Karla Leon '10 shot a strong 79 on the second day to go with her 83 on the first day to finish in a tie for fifth.
Molly Faulkner '12 was the next lowest finisher for Macalester, putting together rounds of 97 and 96 in the best finish of her young college career. Overall the team placed 8th out of 15 teams.
“After the first day, Jordan said something inspiring: 'If you're going to play in this kind of weather, at least try to have fun and play well,'” Leon said. After her better round on Sunday, Leon said that she “proved to myself that in those conditions I can play well.”
The men travelled to the St. Cloud area to play the St. John's Fall Invite. Saturday's round at Greystone Golf Course was cancelled due to continuous heavy rain that started the minute the team arrived at the course, meaning the tournament was reduced to a single round at Blackberry Ridge Golf Course on Sunday.
Ryan Peters '10 toughed out the dreary conditions on Sunday to lead the team with a score of 75, placing him in a tie for eighth in the tournament.
Ben Langworthy '11 continued his recent strong play and recorded a score of 77, placing him in a tie for 19th.
Matt Arck '09 and
Nick Santrach '11 rounded out the top four with rounds of 87. Overall Macalester finished in a tie for 13th out of 19 teams.
“It was tough having the mental aspect of now playing one round instead of two, especially on a tough course like that,” Peters said of Saturday's cancelled round. “I tried to forget the past couple of rounds and just so happened to play through the conditions and play well. The team score could have been better, but there were some tough teams, and tough conditions.”
Next weekend the women's team heads out of the state for the third time this season, playing in their last tournament in preparation for the MIAC Championships, the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic in Normal, Ill. The men's team will return to The Summit Golf Course to play at the St. Olaf Fall Invite in their last tournament in preparation for the Twin Cities Classic.
