Jamestown spoils Mac season-opener at Metrodome

Macalester vs. Jamestown box score

Macalester opened its 2008 baseball season with a doubleheader scheduled against Jamestown (N.D.) at the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The Jimmies crossed the plate seven times in the fifth inning and took the first game 9-3. Game two was called after six innings due to Metrodome time constraints and does not count according to NCAA rules (Jamestown was up 10-3 at the time).

A two-out Jeremy Burgard line drive home run just clearing the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning put Jamestown up 2-0, but after that Macalester starter Elliott Yodh (Fy., Merian, Pa. / Lower Merian) settled down nicely in his collegiate debut. The Jimmies didn't score again until Yodh left the game after tossing four innings. He gave up just three hits and fanned two batters in his four innings and faced just 15 batters.

Five Jamestown pitchers combined to give up just three hits while striking out eight. Burgard had three RBI and scored twice.

In game two, the Jimmies tallied three runs in the third and six more in the fourth to take control. The Scots had a much better hitting game as seven starters collected at least one hit. Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) went 3-for-3 and Robert Engel (So., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) provided a two-run double just short of clearing the fence. Brad Johnson (Jr., Mt. Laurel, N.J. / Lenape) pitched 3 1/3 effective innings of relief, giving up just one run, two hits and a walk while striking out three.

The Scots return to the Metrodome for a late 11:15 p.m. doubleheader Sunday (March 2) with Loras (Ia.) in the second of five Macalester Metrodome dates. Four come before the team's eight-game trip over Spring Break in Phoenix.
