Macalester's
Nathan Young (Fy., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) won the 100-yard backstroke title at the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championships Friday night at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.
Young broke his own school record when he swam a 51.86 in the morning consolation round, earning the No. 1 seed in the finals with the top prelim time. He came into the meet with the second best time on the season. Then in Friday night's finals, he backed up that top seed by placing first with a 51.37 clocking. Young, who placed sixth Thursday in the 200-yard individual medley, edged St. Olaf's Adam Meyer (51.59) to earn his MIAC backstroke championship. He led by .13 seconds at the 50-yard mark and extended the margin over the final half of the race.
Macalester stands in eighth place after the second of three days of competition in Minneapolis.
Mitch Stepleton (So., Boulder, Colo. / Fairview) made the consolation finals of the 200 freestyle (1:53.72) and in the finals swam an identical 1:53.72 time to place 14th overall.
The third day and final day of the MIAC championships begin tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. with preliminary rounds and continues with the finals at 6:30 p.m.
