The Scots placed third at the 12th annual Macalester Invitational Saturday at Riley Pool. St. Thomas ran away with the team title, while Mac was edged by St. Mary's for third place. Macalester turned in three first-place finishes and three runner-up performances on the day.

Nathan Young (So., Denver, Colo. / Littleton) suffered a very rare backstroke defeat, but still had a strong meet in the freestyle races, winning the 50-yard free (22.20) by 0.02 seconds and 200 free (1:53.86). Teammate Jeff Yamashita (So., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani School) also had a big meet, placing first in the 100 freestyle (50.30).

Second-place Macalester performances were recorded by Seth McIntire (Sr., Seattle, Wash. / Garfield) in the 200 butterfly (2:41.61), Young in the 100 back (53.78), and the 200 medley relay team of Young, Emmet Costel (Sr., Maputo, Mozambique / Monona), Yamashita and McIntire (1:45.62).

The Scots are off until the Dec. 6 St. Catherine Invitational.
