Scots cruise past Lawrence77-34 in opener

Macalester's 2008-09 women's basketball season got off to a good start as the Scots cruised past Lawrence 77-34 in Appleton, Wis. The Scots enjoyed a 60-30 rebounding advantage, a 28-19 turnover margin and held the Vikings to a 28% shooting figure. The Scots jumped out 13-2 and were never threatened. They had the game in hand at halftime with a 44-12 lead.

Three Scots reached double figures in scoring and two others added nine points. Trina PaStarr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) posted a double-double to lead the way, finishing with 15 points and 16 rebounds while blocking three shots in just 21 minutes.

Eartha Bell (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn. / Breck) made six of her eight shots and finished with 12 points, and Holly Schiedermayer (Fy. Waupaca, Wis.) came off the bench to score 11 points. Netting nine points apiece were Elise Pagel (Sr., Appleton, Wis. / North) and Ann Baltzer (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.). Pagel returns to the lineup after missing her entire junior campaign with an injury and also had six boards and three steals while playing in her hometown.

Bell and Maggie Wood (Fy., Madison, Wis. / Edgewood) picked up four steals each, while Bell distributed five assists.

Lawrence was led by Erin Gurhold and Laura Aerts with seven points each.

The Scots play their first two games at the new Leonard Center next weekend. They host Whitman (Wash.) Friday at 6 p.m. and Oberlin (Ohio) Sunday at 2 p.m.
