Macalester Men's & Women's Golf - Week 4 Update

While the women's team was taking an off week prior to the MIAC Championships starting October 4th, the men's golf team made the most of a final tune up opportunity, competing in the Twin Cities Classic. The tournament was played over three different courses around the Twin Cities Saturday the 27th through Monday the 29th of September. The tournament, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College, drew some of the top Division III teams in the nation.

Daniel Kerwin '10 played the tournament of his life to pace the team. He shot a career best 75 at Elk River Country Club on Saturday, matched it with a 75 at the Links at Northfork on Sunday, then set an even lower career best with an even par 72 Monday at White Bear Yacht Club. His total score of 222 placed him in a tie for 13th place in the 117 player field, and helped him win co-Mac Athlete of the Week honors. Kerwin has seen his score cascade the past couple of weeks after posting an 89 two weeks ago.

Ryan Peters '10 played a consistent tournament to finish second on the team, recording rounds of 76, 78 and 79 to tie for 55th overall. Nick Santrach '11 was next on the team with rounds of 79, 78 and 81, finishing tied for 75th. Ben Langworthy '11 recorded rounds of 80, 85 and 78 and Matt Arck '09 recorded rounds of 88, 83 and 93 to round out the team scores. Overall the team finished in 15th place out of 23 teams.

This weekend's MIAC Championships will be played at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids. Both teams are looking to rebound from disappointing finishes last year, and based on recent performances it appears both teams are poised to fulfill that promise.

“I think we all have really high expectations and we definitely think we'll be moving up the ranks again,” Jordan Matheson '09 said. “I think we're capable of playing really well. I want to play well, I want to win.”

Coach Nause adds “Both the men's and women's teams have worked hard since last year, coming back this fall with improved swings and overall games. That work has resulted in many career rounds on both the men's and women's teams. With those rounds under our belts this fall, there is good reason to expect a competitive Conference tournament from both squads, which we'll need versus very tough MIAC conference foes. My sights are set high for both the men and women to finish the season on a great note!”
