An all-conference performer and standout in both track & field and soccer after arriving on the Macalester campus from Harare, Zimbabwe, Nelson Jumbe is a two-time NCAA Division III triple jump national champion.
In track and field he was a star and one of the MIAC’s most accomplished tracksters of all time. As both a sophomore and senior Jumbe placed first at the national championships in the triple jump. He also has a second-place national finish to his credit and was an accomplished long jumper as well. Jumbe’s 1992 triple jump mark of 51-feet, 10-inches has yet to be topped at a national championship meet and is the fourth-best jump ever recorded in the Division III ranks.
In soccer Jumbe was a key player on some pretty good Macalester teams and started three years for coach John Leaney.
He coached at RPI while earning his master’s and PhD., and coached a pair of All-American jumpers while there.
