Marv "Whitey" Helling was co-captain of the 1947 Scots football team that went undefeated and gave Macalester its first MIAC football championship in 22 years. That year the Scots outscored their opponents 72-12 and won three games by shutouts. He was named to the All-State football team.
Following graduation from Macalester, Helling coached football at Jackson, Detroit Lakes, and Minneapolis-Washburn high schools, and the University of North Dakota. His 1966 UND team won the Pecan Bowl.
A former resident of New Brighton, Helling later served as the associate executive director of the Minnesota State High School League.
